Practical website planning

Website content audit checklist

Make a practical inventory and decide what deserves to stay.

Inventory

List each indexable URL, title, purpose, target audience, owner and review date in a spreadsheet.
Add available search traffic and enquiry data. No traffic does not automatically mean a page is useless.

Evaluate

Read the page against its intended purpose. Identify missing answers, outdated facts and unsupported claims.
Check internal links, calls to action, image rights and duplication with other pages.

Choose an action

Keep accurate useful pages; improve incomplete ones.
Combine overlapping pages only when the combined page serves the same intent.
Redirect retired pages to a genuinely equivalent destination. Otherwise return a useful 404 or 410.
Record changes and check important links again after publishing.
